Explanation “Among Friends” 1995.

"The painting Among Friends was made by me somewhere in 1995."

It's a sober but clear picture in which I wanted to show guilt, shame and strength. The character in the front whose face is only half-visible, seems to want to escape from the situation of the character behind him who is also depicted. This character looks straight forward in the emptiness of the canvas, his glance seems to be focussed. However, the viewer doesn't see what he is looking at with starry eyes. The rawness which is used to put the acrylic and oil paint on the canvas gives relief and shape to the environment of the two people. Both of them don't seem to be together in thoughts but definitely on the same side of the story on the canvas, the stage.

Among Friends was painted by me at that very moment when I was insecure about the most important relationships I have had with the people in my immediate environment, people who are family and at the same time no family..

Maura is born in Colombia, but raised up in The Netherlands. Now she has her own dance company ‘Mauradanst' which means ‘Maura dance'… in several dance projects, she makes dance choreography and she teach dance to kids and young adults. ‘Mauradanst' is marked by her South- American blood and temperament. ‘Mauradanst' produces special acts in aerial dance (like tissue and ring dance) and dance performances which are Latin flavored, acrobatic and combined with contemporary dance.

‘Theatre Group MAAR' is her other physical theatre company. This company is a foundation since 2009 raised by Maura herself together with Arna van der Sloot. Wherein she makes physical theatre performances on location and organizes dance projects with children on primary schools and young adults on secondary schools. ‘Dolcy&Grace' will be a new production of MAAR which can be seen by organization ‘Theatre Etappe' on the free market in Weesp on Queens day this year, and Fries Street festival in Friesland (28 t/m 30 May 2010). This production will be offered combined with dance and theatre workshops on several schools and organizations.

‘Dolcy&Grace' is a physical theatre performance for kids from 6 years old, about ‘the force of your own creation'. This story shows the abilities of fantasy wherein two worlds of reality and fantasy are coming together. On a lonely day Grace found a doll, named Dolcy, which comes alive and creates magic things for both of the characters.

During the years Maura has danced for different dance and theatre projects like ‘Festival Over't IJ' in Amsterdam, Aerial dance projects with Circo Encuentro in Mexico City, Modern dance performance with students dance school in Pune (India) , and dance theatre performance tour on Street Festival Cerventino de Cleta through Mexico.

In future she will dance more abroad and search for the exchange in dance and theatre of different countries. Especially Mexico, Colombia and other South American countries. Maura: “The more we exchange our knowledge with each other, the more we learn from each other!”

With Theatre Group MAAR she has danced and played a physical theatre performance ‘Het Traject' on train stations as location. This show was also seen in several theaters in Holland.

Someone's Daughter: She's Adopted, But Don't Tell

Personal details
Name: Bowes
First name(s): Aurette
Nickname: Aurette
Nationality: South African
Place of birth: Durban, South Africa
Date of birth: 10 June 1964

Someone's Daughter: She's Adopted, But Don't Tell

Someone's Daughter is Aurette Bowes' own true account of how, as an adult, she learned that she is not her parents' biological child, but was adopted by them as a baby in a closed adoption. The book tells of the profound and permanent impact this discovery had on her life and that of her family. It documents the search for her birth mother, their reunion and the development of their relationship thereafter.

Someone's Daughter relates how the author found emotional healing and learned to embrace her dual identity. Concurrently with telling her story, the author deals with the ongoing, complex dynamics that surround adoption. Adoption is viewed by most as a happy, joyous event in which a childless couple takes an unwanted baby into their home, selflessly raises it as their own and everybody lives “happily ever after.” Sadly, this perception is far removed from the truth. The very act of adoption necessitates rejection, loss and considerable emotional pain. Few people, including many adoptees, birth mothers and adoptive parents fail to realize that without rejection or loss there can be no adoption.

Someone's Daughter is primarily aimed at adoptees who are struggling to find healing from the never-ending barrage of emotional issues they encounter throughout their lives as a direct result of their adoption. The book provides them with the information they need to conduct their own legal search for their birth parents. Birth mothers, adoptive parents, immediate families and depression sufferers will also benefit from reading Someone's Daughter. It is not a self-help book, but a deeply personal account of the author's own experience and how she came to find true healing. Whether readers decide to follow the same path is up to them.
